Regardless the improved knowledge on some aspects of genetic endowment on human physical performance in the recent years, the monitoring of top athletes' progress is based on diagnostic programs of properly selected and administrated laboratory and field tests. Basic characteristics for physiological tests, like as validity, reliability and sports specificity are discussed in relation to the sports practice.

Examples of testing diagnostic batteries for top endurance athletes, kayak padlers, ice hockey players and alpine skier and figure skater are presented and illustrated by the data of internationally successful Czech athletes - Olympic and/or World Championship winners. Main problems of exercise physiology diagnostics in competitive and top-level sport that limit its efficiency both in the sport practice and in sport science theory are also discussed.
