Non-invasive testing of the kidneys has a limited ability to describe the condition of the renal tissue. It is desirable that we are able to distinguish between patients with chronic, irreversible scarring of the kidneys from those with active and potentially treatable lesions.

We tested the ability of urinary alpha-1-microglobulin (A1m) to distinguish among patients with different degree of renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis.
