The First Youth Olympic Games of 2010 – innovations and challenges

Publication at Faculty of Physical Education and Sport |
2013

Abstract

This chapter outlines the principles underlying the introduction of the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010, and explores some of the practical challenges in implementing them. It identifies some innovative ideas and practices, many of which address ethical issues, such as age and fairness, talent identification and early specialisation, exploitation, cultural diversity and political interference.

However, the authors warn that many of the issues covered highlight already existing challenges for the Olympic Movement, albeit in a novel form.
