The Play of Mary Magdalene

Publication at Central Library of Charles University, Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

The short Czech play, preserved in the Schlägl manuscript, belongs to the profane tradition of vernacular religious drama of the second half of 14th century. It is the oldest example of a medieval drama about the life and conversion of Mary Magdalene.

The text is also unique due to its special, three-fold composition and the use of Czech lyrical songs within the scenes of “cheery” and sinful Mary Magdalene.
