Technicity of the Hippocratic medical art and its limits

Publication |
2012

Abstract

The study concentrates on an important concept of hippocratic medicine, the concept of techne (art or craft) which integrates the theoretical as well as practical dimension of medicine. The complex and multiple relationship between the techne and phusis (nature) is introduced, too.

The main focus is put especially on the reflexion of limits of techne (as recognized by hippocratic physicians themselves), which are caused by the art's lack of precision, akribie. The ethical foundation of medical craft and its demands on behalf of both doctor and patient is discussed as well.

The author stresses that the crucial role of techne in the shaping of European thought should never be underestimated.
