Tygacil appears to be an alternative therapy MRSA and other resistant infections of soft tissue in orthopedic surgery, unfortunately jame not limited by the limited clinical experience. Tigecycline is primarily designed especially for infections of skin and soft tissue infections and complicated intra-abdominal infections and not for bone and joint infections.
Tigecycline has activity against both methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA), and so particularly for MRSA. Although not yet in the literature no human studies the use of tigecycline for treating osteomyelitis, animal studies indicate that tigecycline may be advantageously used in the treatment of bone infections.
