Abstract

This entry elaborates the conceptual similarities and differences between interest groups, social movements, and social movement organizations (SMOs). First, two views of their relationship are presented, followed by an abbreviated description of the main contributions to their conceptualization.

Although, according to an important part of the available scholarship,contemporary SMOs and interest groups share many common features, the entry concludes by summarizing differences between the two concepts.
