Motherhood as a Space for the Other, the Different One

Publication at Protestant Theological Faculty |
2013

Abstract

This chapter looks for the phenomenon of motherhood as a shared space with the other both on a physical and a symbolic level. The opening of our space for the other means at the same time the kenotic movement of oneself.

This antimony of both movements-opening and reducing oneself- is illustrated on the dialogue between an Orthodox nun mother Maria Skobtsova and a French feminist and philosopher Hélèn Cixous.
