The chapter deals with the terminology which is suitable to refer to the Czech language of the 17th and the first three quarters of the 18th century, summarizing the current state of knowledge which is not entirely satisfactory. Further, it highlights the importance of the demographical, social and cultural contexts of the period (especially the level of literacy and the state of the educational system) and presents the criteria for the most suitable division of the subject matter.
The division is primarily chronological (17th vs. 18th century) and only secondarily geographical and denominational.
