This paper describes the development of a tradition of teaching Czech as a foreign language from the first attempts in Vienna in the second half of the 19th cent., through teaching Czech situation in the first half of the 19th cent., a demonstration of teaching methods in extracurricular classes in the second half of the 19th cent. It refers to the tradition of help and support teaching Czech in Czech communities abroad in the interwar period and the tradition academic teaching Czech in univeristies abroad.
It evaluates the current conditions for teaching Czech as a second / foregn language and contemplates its future in conditions that are not favorable for it.
