The Hustlers

Abstract

This text deals with the topic of so called "veksláci" in socialist Czechoslovakia. These people played a central role within the Czechoslovak black market before 1989.

Veksláci profited from trading foreign currencies and special Tuzex vouchers for Czechoslovak crowns as well as from smuggling and selling various consumer goods from the West such as clothes or electronics. The text itself focuses not only on their illegal activities but also on their lifestyle and consuming practices.

It also imposes the question whether we can treat this specific group of people as a particular subculture. Two extensive interviews with former veksláci are an integral part of the text.
