The Two-dimensional Aesthetics of the Environment and the Sources of Value

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2013

Abstract

The paper provided an outline of general conception of aesthetic experience of natural environment, which is (1) built on an analysis of the relationship between the narrative and the ambient dimensions of the aesthetic value of a natural environment, and (2) which is at the same time a modified version of above mentioned kantian conception. First of all, the two dimensions as they were introduced by Cheryl Foster in her study “The Narrative and the Ambient in Environmental Aesthetics” (1998) were presented and then the relation between these dimensions was analyzed with respect to the possibilities and problems raised by distinguishing between them.

Next, the author argued that their strong complementarity and specific relation between these two dimensions constitute defining feature of aesthetic field. This conception can explain according to the author the difference between the aesthetic and the non-aesthetic, and can also provide an answer to the question of the non-reductive differentiation between the aesthetic value of the environment and other modes of environmental value.
