Epileptic seizures, epilepsy and alcohol

Abstract

Alcohol exhibits multiple mechanisms of action on brain receptors that can lead to increase or decrease of seizure threshold. Most commonly, epileptic seizures occur as withdrawal seizures in people with alcohol abuse or dependence.

In epilepsy patients alcohol can be a trigger and ingestion of large amounts should be avoided. However, in most of people with well-controlled epilepsy small amounts do not lead to seizure exacerbation.
