Abstract
The article discusses the status of common Hindi in modern Indian society. It critically evaluates the attitude of Indian society towards the mother tongue, as well as the language policy and its role in promotion of the national language in India and abroad.
In the final section, the author provides a historical description of the contribution of Czech Indological tradition in propagation of Hindi language and literature.
