Addictological perspective on the problem of alcohol in the Czech Republic (and briefly on the history of approaches to alcoholism)

Abstract

Persistently high levels of alcohol consumption in the Czech Republic (16.6 liters of pure alcohol per person over 15 years per year) is associated with many health risks and social problems. In the short term interest of the czech public about the problems of alcohol increased last year in the so-called „methanol affair“, but a high number of ethanol poisoning remains unanswered.It is reported historical context of negative phenomena associated with alcohol abuse in the territory occupied by the current Czech Republic.The main cause of 70 percent of all deaths related to alcohol (untreated or poorly treated) is alcohol addiction.

Increase in number of patients treated for alcohol addiction is crucial to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with alcohol abuse.
