The book titled Philokalia came into being in two different editions. The Greek version compiled by Nicodemus of Naxos, aka the Hagiorite, was published in 1782.
The Church-Slavonic version of Paisii Velichkovski appeared in 1793. The collection of sayings of spiritual authors dating from 4th to 15th centuries aimed at strengthening the life of Christian communities in the second half of the 18th century, reaching out to further Christian generations.
The Philokalia anthology and its consequent translations brought about movements of spiritual renaissance within the Church and have inspired Christian spirituality up to our day. That is why the Philokalia is reflected as Book, as Movement, as Spirituality.
The present collective monograph was composed by theologians of diverse Christian confessions who in their research of Christian spirituality, have engaged in a fruitful dialogue between the traditions of the Christian East and West. The title suggests a wide scope of reflexion and viewpoints concerning this important phenomenon in the history of Christian spiritualities.
