Abstract

The chapter deals with specifics of academic culture and changing characteristics of environment in higher education institutions. Key concepts of the explanation and critical analysis are „quality“ and „excellence“.

Traditional and new academic culture are compared. Their conflicts and actual hybrid academic culture framed by economic and technocratic criteria are in the focus.

How to grasp the present state or as a crisis or a development of an academic culture seems to be a key question for futher interpretation.
