Changing views of religious experience in the age of secularization

Abstract

This article focuses on one aspect of secularization, the one which affects and transforms the experience of God, also called religious experience. It is an interesting phenomenon that crosses religious beliefs and intersects with many various disciplines.

In introductory part of this article the author discusses definition and different views of the term “religious experience”. The following part deals with the history of the concept of religious experience and describes important scholars, who were devoted to this phenomenon.

In the main part of this article the author presents current situation and the importance of experience among believers. The outcome of this article supports the theory that secularization brings new forms of religiosity and makes religious experience more accessible to ordinary believers.

Transient, ineffable and noetic feelings are no more a gift for privileged group of ascetics, but new and of adventure, which everybody seeks.
