The article discusses the issue of consumption and consumerism. Analyzing selected sermons and church documents, which were presented in congregations of different churches in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia or published in church as well as secular media, it shows that the term “consumerism” is often used as a label, without a deeper reflection and specification, denoting everything the church wants to delimitate itself against.
The paper argues that not the superfluous use of tags such as consumerism/consumerist society, but only a thorough analysis and effort to understand the society can help the church to fulfill its task in the world in a relevant way. Interpreting the biblical passage from Ecclesiastes 9, it suggests an alternative for the Christian modus vivendi.
