Pericardial calcifications originate in relation to inflammation of the pericardium. The presence of pericardial calcification might be followed be the origination of constrictive pericarditis.

Distinguishing of mere pericardial calcifications from constrictive pericarditis plays an important role in the correct therapeutic approach.
