Clinical use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) when operating on brain tumours in the primary motor area

Abstract
The article explains the principle and methodology of functional magnetic resonance imaging in localizing the primary motor cortex. The explanation of fMRI principles is followed by focusing on our own group of 18 patients in whom the reliabiliity of fMRI was evaluated in comparison with a conventional method - electrical cortical stimulation.
In conclusion, we propose some fundamental rules for how to proceed when functionally examining and operating on brain tumours in the motor area.
