This paper attempts to describe the Second Vatican Council in its four periods especially through the speeches of John XXIII and Paul VI and through the contents of the council documents with special regard to the theological tradition of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church (CSHC). It has a sound basis in the fact that the theology of the CSHC was born from a similar movement which also made efforts to update (aggiornamento) the church.
Between the council reforms and the reform proposals that played a significant role in the founding of the CSHC, is a series of similar ideas, such as the translation of liturgical books into the vernacular, the active participation of the laity in the celebration of the liturgy, a rediscovered importance of the universal priesthood, the emphasis on the care for the world, a new emphasis on the freedom of conscience etc. However, there are also a number of differences.
The study intends to point out that the interest in spiritual life in the Roman Catholic Church is an important element of self-reflection in the CSHC. It allows the church to check its fundamental decisions, to strengthen its identity and to consolidate self-confidence in its own theological tradition.
