Abstract

Endoscopic investigation of small bowel was for a long time out of the range of our devices. Using push-enteroscopy we reached only short upper part of the jejunum, intra-operative enteroscopy burdened the patient by surgical procedure.

The 2001 year was a breakthrough in small bowel investigation. Double-balloon enteroscopy and capsule enteroscopy was launched.

Both of these methods allow complete investigation of the small intestine. Another devices were developed consequently (single balloon enteroscope, spiral enteroscope etc.) and a new term "deep enteroscopy" was accepted.

Deep enteroscopy allows complete visualisation, biopsy, and treatment in the small bowel. Together with the capsule endoscopy these two methods are the essential modalities for the management of small intestinal diseases.
