Atmospheric circulation and precipitation in regional climate models during major heat waves in Central Europe

Abstract

Heat waves are important phenomena of the European climate that have major impact on the natural environment and society. In this study, we evaluated atmospheric circulation and precipitation in individual regional climate models (RCMs) during major Central European heat waves.

Considerable variations in heat wave simulations were found among the RCMs and these differences were well-linked to simulated precipitation during these events. This indicates that a proper reproduction of precipitation is crucial for credible simulations of future heat waves.
