Psychotherapy of anxiety disorders

Abstract

Anxiety disorders are the most common of all psychiatric disorders and result in considerable functional impairment and distress. The major anxiety disorders are panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, mixed anxiety depresive disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia and specific phobia.

Psychotherapy is the treatment of choice for these disorders. Supportive, psychodynamic or group psychotherapy alone or in addition to medication might be helpful for some of these patients.

But real effectivity is unknown yet because lack of studies. Cognitive-behavioral therapy demonstrated long therm effectivity in most patients with anxiety disorderes in many research studies.

Recent studies show that exposure, cognitive restructuring and social skills training may be of significant benefit in mosts patients with anxiety disorders
