The effect of water deficit upon formation of dry matter by maize plant

Abstract

In greenhouse experiments, we have monitored the dry matter of shoot biomass in 14 genotypes of maize. Juvenile maize plants were cultivated in two versions of the experiment – a control version and a stressed version.

The control plants were irrigated with 70 % of the field water capacity. For the stressed version, irrigation was completely discontinued for sixteen days.

The stressed plants increased weight of dry matter of shoot. The highest level decrease of dry matter by shoot was in the genotype 23x704 (decrease about 75.04%).

The lowest level decrease of weight was identified in stressed plants CE 704 (decrease about 25.24%).
