Go to the species in paleoentomology: illusion or necessity

Abstract

Today palaeoentomology become important branch of entomology studying fossil insect record and co-evolution with other organisms. Therefore its significance for phylogeny and palaeobiogeography of insects is conspicuous.

We provide major tasks relevant to the conception of species in palaeoentomology, duration of species, utilisation for phylogeny and biogeographical scenarios, as well as constrains for taxonomy affected by taphonomy (post-depositional deformations) or polymorphism in selected groups (Blattodea). Nevertheless, the scope remains obvious: establishment of the past insect diversity and their implications on the insect phylogeny and history.
