Abstract
The article deals with the main development trends of the population in the European Union, especially after the recent waves of enlargement in 2004 and 2007. The next section covers the basic differences in the level of total fertility rate between countries set in the broader context of the current changes in reproductive behaviour in European countries.
In the evaluation is special attention paid to the Czech Republic and its position within the European Union.
