West Bohemia (Czech Republic), Vogtland (Saxony, Germany) and partly NE Bavaria, generally referred to as the West Bohemian/Vogtland earthquake swarm region, are well known by periodical reoccurrence of intraplate earthquake swarms. Swarms of weak earthquakes (mostly of magnitudes ML 4.0 appear only exceptionally.
The severe swarm in 1985/86 with two largest shocks of ML = 4.6 and ML = 4.2 initiated permanent observations as well as systematic geoscience investigations in this region.
