Abstract

The Czech Republic's avifauna comprises 406 bird species. Since the start of the 1980s the numbers of around a third of the species has declined, another third of species has increased their numbers, with the final third remaining stable.

There has been an increase in the numbers of species that have been subject to international conservation efforts. Species benefiting from changes in the state of woodland.

By contrast the sharpest decline in numbers has been found among farmland birds and some species reliant on wetland habitats. This decline has been linked to intensified agricultural practices and fishpond management.

The construction of wind farms, power lines or transport corridors also poses problems for birds. Bird conservation has not been able to prevent the decline in farmland and wetland birds.

One reason for this has been the failure to make full use of the results of scientific research stemming from long-term monitoring.
