Spectral turn of social sciences, or, ghosts (and peple) in the Prague metro

Abstract

Social sciences, as some commentators noted, have been undergoing a change in conceptualising their subjects. New language that has been emerging during the so-called "spectral turn" is full of ghostly metaphors.

In my paper I use the technological underground landscape of Prague metro as an exemplary space where the spectral can be easily approached. My aim is to discuss the possibilities this new ghostly imagery opens up for social sciences.

I argue that, since ghostly resides at the threshold of real and unreal, as a conceptual tool it can help us to better understand the complexity of the world around us.
