Environmental conservation in military training areas – source of spatial conflicts?

Publication

Abstract

There are only several places in the Central European space which we can call wilderness. Above all these are the so called military training areas (MTA).

The environmental history of these spaces went through a deep reversion. Changes in their cultural and political as well as social and economic profile can be compared with the specific belt of the former iron curtain zones only.

No other areas except the core zones of the national parks and reservations are nowadays so rich on environmental values like the military polygons. Their exceptionality consists in régime of the public entry and low population density.

These factors mainly involve the rich occurrence of the endangered species and the low public pressure on the nature exploitation.
