Isolation of DNA from fruit - a subject for practical exercises in biology

Abstract

DNA is a relatively stable molecule and standard protocols are available to extract it from different sources and to store it for long periods of time. Most of the laboratory protocols are aimed at isolation of DNA from bacteria and are not suited for the use in the classroom.

Here we present a very simple protocol for extraction of DNA from banana. The protocol is based on chemicals commonly found in households, therefore you could use it in your school laboratory or in the classroom.

Moreover, the purpose of the different steps or the reason for the addition of certain chemicals is explained. This is your chance to isolate DNA with your own hands.
