Eastern Slovak-Rusyn Lexical Parallels as exemplified in The Atlas of The Slovak Language

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2014

Abstract

This paper focuses on language contacts between the Eastern Slovak and Rusyn dialects in the North-Eastern Slovakia, in particular, on the lexical borrowings and parallels in these dialects. The paper is primarily based on the Atlas of the Slovak Language; in addition, it relies on a range of other dialectological sources.

The comparison with the atlases of local Rusyn and Ukrainian dialects enables retracing of the territorial spread of lexical parallels in these related Slavonic dialects. The observations are also made regarding an increase in the intensity of contacts between the dialects in direction from East to West.
