Areal distribution and precipitation-altitude relationship of heavy short-term precipitation in the Czech Republic in the warm part of the year

Abstract

The areal analysis of the distribution of heavy short-term precipitation on the area of the Czech republic from the warm period of the year (from April to September) is presented in the paper. The distribution of the rainfalls is studied in dependence on the altitude and the orography.

Measurements of radar reflectivity obtained from two radars of the Czech weather radar network CZRAD (Skalky, Brdy) is used for the analysis. In order to obtain adjusted rainfalls rain gauge data are also used.

The results show that 1-h precipitations with high rain rates are without apparent dependence on altitude. The impact of mountains is evident for precipitation of longer duration including stratiform and convective precipitations.

Pure convective precipitation does not depend on altitude for heavy precipitation.
