Abstract

Obesity and overweight are considered as risk factors for many common diseases including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). There are some results in the medical literature, that overweight and obesity were protective for cardiovascular and total mortality in comparison to normal body mass index (i.e.

BMI below 25 kg/m2); this phenomenon is named "obesity paradox". We have few long-term interventional studies in patients with T2DM concerning weight reduction and cardiovascular and/or total mortality rate.

All those studies following influence of dietary and physical activity habits in patients with T2DM on their mortality are difficult in their methodology;it is necessary to adjust mortality risk to many other risk factors which are influencing mortality rate (e.g. age, drugs, smoking etc.). Scottish study (J.

Logue) has showed, that patients with T2DM with overweight had reduced cardiovascular and total mortality rate in comparison to the patients with normal BMI or obesity. There is U-shaped curve association between BMI and cardiovascular and/or total mortality in the majority of studies. Obesity paradox is not yet clear and it should be studied intensively.
