'He rises from the Throne of Judgment and sits upon the Throne of Mercy' : Concept of Mercy in Rabbinic Literature

Publication at Protestant Theological Faculty |
2008

Abstract

Unlike the stereotypic assumption about Rabbinic Judaism stressing the deeds as opposed to Christianity based on the mercy, the survey interprets the Rabbinic literature as depicting God's mercy as one of the most characteristic features of God's relation to mankind. However, while Christianity sees the grace in paradox justification of sinner, the Rabbinic literature on the other hand, posits the mercy in a no less paradox initial act of God's creation.

The ambiguity of human existence is mirrored i the dialectical conception of 'measure of judgement' and 'measure of mercy,' the two strategies God, according to Rabbinic literature, adopts to deal with man.
