Worship from the point of view of semiotics. Charles S. Peirce and Umberto Eco as an inspiration for liturgics

Abstract

The study explores the reception of two semiotic concepts of sign, the dyadic concept of Ferdinand de Saussure and Umberto Eco and the triadic concept of Charles S. Peirce in the contemporary liturgics in Germany and English speaking countries.

It comes to the conclusion that semiotics doesn?t provide only a set of analytical tools for exploring worship but also an epistemological model. In context of Christian worship Peirce?s specific realism seems to be more plausible than Eco?s nominalistic theory.
