The authors assessed in lymphocytes of the CSF the presence of G and M non-specific immunoglobulins oy the immunocytochemical method. The group was formed by 25 samples of CSF with a lymphocytic pleocytosis, i.e. with the non-specific picture of acute inflammation of the CNS.
Intracellular antibodies assessed in B Ijnnphocytes by the immunocytochemical method are evidence of their intrathecal origin in the CNS. In our experiments the morphology of cells with stained inracytoplasmatic immunoglobulin corresponded to the appearance of plasma cells.
Consistent with data in the literature we recorded a strikingly high ratio of intracytoplasmatic IgM in CSF cells in patients with acute manifestations of neuroborreliosis. Assessment of antibodies in CSF at a cellular level can contribute to decisions on therapeutic procedures in the early stage of inflammation of the CNS, in particular in patients with suspected neuroborreliosis.
According to our experience immunocytochemical detection of non-specific intraceluUar immunoglobulins is a simple and not expensive supplementary method of routine cytological examination of the CSF with lymphocytic pleocytosis.
