The authors summarize findings on continuation and maintenance treatment of psychotic depression. In the contemporary psychiatric literature surpassingly there are no controlled double blind studies concerned with this subject, but only prospective open and retrospective studies which are only few on number.
The authors of these studies agree that at the onset of continuation treatment tricyclic antidepressants should be administered combined with neuroleptics, but there is no agreement for how long neuroleptics should be administered. Data on the use of modern antidepressants and atypical neuroleptics which with regard to a more favourable profile of undesirable effects would be more suitable are, with few exceptions, not available.
