Genetic and Immunological Aspects of Type I Diabetes Mellitus in Childhood

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
2000

Abstract

The incidence of type I diabetes mellitus (IDDM) in children varies enormously between continents and countries. The present incidence is at an intermediate level compared to other European countries, but increased significantly during years.

The precise mapping of type I diabetes incidence and its trends helps to investigate interactions of recent genetic and environmental factors at a population level and has implication for the public health system. Authors presented the first report on HLA class II and insulin gene polymorphism association of type I diabetes in the Czech population this year.

Prediction of type 1 diabetes is possible by genetic risk analysis, autoantibodies evaluation and functional test of stimulated insulin secretion performance in first-degree relatives of diabetic patients. Standardized methods for primary and secondary prevention of type I diabetes were introduced in first-degree relatives of diabetic patients.

These methods are used for the Czech Registry of Diabetic Children.
