Some somatic aspects of treatment of eating disorders

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
1999

Abstract

The authors discuss eating disorders. They draw attention to some somatic aspects of anorexia nervosa and bulimia.

These are psychosomatic diseases where at the onset of treatment it is important to rule out other somatic or mental diseases. The disorder leads apart from typical psychic changes also to serious somatic changes, to marked hypotrophy or cachexia.

Regime therapy and psychotherapy are called for. Typical somatic changes develop in conjunction with prolonged malnutrition.

During treatment principles of proper realimentation must be respected and the patient's target weight must be given.
