Abstract

Celiac disease (also gluten enteropathy or celiac sprue) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the gastrointestinal system, but it can also have extraintestinal symptoms (for example, Duhring's disease, or "cutaneous celiac disease"). It is manifested by chronic inflammation of the small intestine associated with increased permeability of the intestinal wall.
