Abstract

14 premature infants (birth weight below 2500 g) born in 1991 - 1995 after abdominal surgery with ileostomy and short bowel syndrome were followed up. The mortality rate of this group of patients was compared with the neonatal mortality rate and low birthweight infant mortality rate in our institute.

Low birthweight infants with ileostomy are a small group with a high mortality rate (285.7 %o). They need special care focused on peri-operative management, nutrition and therapy.

In conclusion basic items of pre-operative and long-term post-operative approach to neonates with ileostomy and short bowel syndrome are summarised.
