The cortical oscillations over the Rolandic cortex depict the dynamics of activation and inhibition within the primary sensory and motor areas. The amplitude changes of the Rolandic rhythms during voluntary movements and following brief somatosensory stimuli can be studied using the method of event-related desynchronization.
Using coherence analysis, the functional coupling of different cortical regions or between the motor cortical area and the electromyogram of the contracting muscle can be analyzed.
