Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) belongs to demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system. Mostly young individuals are affected, usually following vaccination or infection.
The disease course tends to be fulminant, with general alteration, often leaving a permanent neurological deficit. Basic clinical, epidemiological and laboratory characteristics of ADEM and therapeutic measures are reviewed in the article presented.
The authors have reported on a case of a 21-year-old patient with severe course of ADEM, in whom the disease progressed despite the therapy with corticosteroids, immunosuppressives and plasmapheresis. Finally, the administration of intravenous immunoglobulin resulted in clinical improvement
