Does deafferentational pain result from long-term absence of afferentation?

Abstract

The article reviews present knowledge about neuropathic pain evoked by total deafferentation. The role of injury discharge in the animal model is accentuated together with the role of NMDA receptors.

At the end, new view on deafferentational pain is based on the crucial role of the deafferentation itself rather than on ongoing loss of afferentation.
