Cerebral lateralization and schizophrenia

Publication |
2006

Abstract

Progress in neuroimaging, genetics and molecular biology contributed greatly to the schizophrenia research, including investigation of the etiological factors. One of the discussed research topics, still not fully understood, is a cerebral lateralization.

There is a significant lack of the normal cerebral asymmetry in schizophrenia patients. Numerous studies reported variability in distribution of cerebral structure volume in schizophrenia subjects, compared to healthy controls.

More recently, functional magnetic resonance showed reduced language lateralization in patients with schizophrenia. The lack of normal patterns of asymmetry can be found in both patients with schizophrenia and their non-schizophrenic relatives.
