Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2006

Abstract

We present basic physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms participating in the pain experience during pediatric burn trauma. Pain is present even in case of full thickness skin injury, as stimuli originate in marginal areas and during nerve endings growing into burned area.

Primary and secondary hyperalgesia result from peripheral and central sensitization. They play an important role in pain perception and new pharmacological techniques are developed to suppress them.

Measuring of pain intensity has a crucial role to assess the effectivity of treatment. The article gives review of the measurements tools and problems according to the age of the child.

Finally, a list and dosing of the most commonly used drugs for pain therapy of burned children and the strategies for pain therapy during different stages of surgical treatment are presented
