Overactive bladder: Diagnostics, social aspects, quality of life

Abstract

The article deals with the issue of overactive bladder as the most frequent cause of chronic health problems and impairment of quality of life, including its cost implications for healthcare systems in developed countries. The author provides an overview of initial, basic and specialised urogynecological diagnostics.

In the differential diagnosis section, attention is drawn to serious tumours of the bladder and neurological and metabolic diseases with symptoms similar to hyperactive bladder. Special attention is given to the issue of elderly female patients where the necessity of special care and individual diagnostic approach is emphasized.

Also addressed are social aspects of symptoms of overactive bladder and the community's approach to women affected by urinary incontinence
